Graphite pencils, artists charcoal, and Students will learn how to create drawings using various lines and shading methods. They will learn that different angles of holding a pencil create different effects (various widths and highlighting effects). We use professional artists' brands of pencils which easily blend to produce smooth drawings. Oil pastels resemble crayons or sticks which consist of a pigment mixed with oil or wax. The end result is usually rich in color and smooth in texture. These are fun to draw with and easily glide over paper. Students enjoy the vibrant drawings this medium produces. Soft pastels are more dry and feel much like chalk. They blend easily and produce softer and more delicate color effects. Technique is taught in proper application to paper (shading in a lighter pressure is best for further layering on the different colors). Students also learn the importance of different tones (lights and darks) when working with this type of media and proper way to blend oil pastels. Students should wear clothing that is proper for working in this medium which can be messy. All materials are provided. Art smocks or aprons are made available for the students too.

Fencing & Martial Arts 2025-2026 Season
WELCOME TO THE BATTLEMASTERS HERO TRAINING PROGRAM!
In this Martial Arts program, we train in six different weapon styles: Shortsword, Longsword, Staff, Nunchaku, Double Swords, Knife (all fully padded) and explore historical/cultural weapons traditions from other times and places. However - more than working with the weapons - we wish to produce HEROES! The BattleMasters Padded Weapons Hero Training Program emphasizes and stresses the development and employment of the HEROIC VIRTUES: Discipline, Courage, Honor, Compassion and more. Mastery and demonstration of these Virtues is essential to completing our program and becoming a vaunted BLACK SASH!
BattleMasters Hero Training on Mondays at 500p is mainly geared for Heroes who can only come once/week and are New or at Beginning Level:
New/Beginning BattleMasters Heroes (White - Orange Sash) will come on Mondays at 500pm.
Our Intermediate Level BattleMasters Heroes (Green - Purple Sash) should make their main training session every Wednesday at 500pm.
However, it is possible to see all levels at any session as our Advanced Heroes will be attending the easier level classes to help provide mentoring and encouragement to the less experienced and to have extra training for their advanced studies.
Attending only once per week will make progress slow unless supplementary practice at home is employed ("PRACTICE" is the work Heroes will do at home and outside of classes - those are for introducing new technique and polishing skills. Serious practice must be done OUTSIDE of classes). It is highly recommended that Heroes at an Intermediate Level wishing to develop and improve fully come at least twice per week (Level Two). All Heroes at an Advanced Level (Red Sash and above) are REQUIRED to attend at least twice per week in order to complete the program in a reasonable amount of time. As the program material increases in complexity with each new level, the amount of in-class instruction time required also increases. Three times per week would be optimal for Advanced Heroes.
Because there is a large body of material to learn, BattleMasters Heroes will assemble their own BattleManual to use as reference for at-home practice with Curriculum sheets, Virtue Sheets, Progress Notes/Sheets, and completed Level Check/Tests. This will give them full awareness of what is expected of them, how long it will take given their attendance, and the work they need to do to complete their level. To help supplement the in-class training, full overview technique videos are available so that Heroes may train 24/7 with proper technical demonstrations.
Finally, the MOST fun part of the BattleMasters Hero Training Program is our regular BattleGames, created by the Masters to challenge Heroes and offer the opportunity for the training to have real meaning as they battle each other in fully immersive and interactive combat encounters!

YOUNG BLADES for New/Beg Levels (Mondays, 60 min sessions) is a great opportunity for students, ages 8-12, to begin to make progress in the noble sport of fencing. We will stretch, warmup, drill on fundamentals such as footwork, bladework, point control, develop stamina, and start to understand basic tactics in fencing bouts. Brand new students may sign up for this class although taking the Learn to Fence 2-Session Intro Course on Saturdays is strongly recommended first.
Fencing is often called 'Physical Chess' and as such, Sportsmanship is properly emphasized during training. Students who demonstrate excellence in the training program may be eventually selected for fencing competition by the instructor. Fencing tournaments may be offered informally or formally during the season by the Memphis Fencers' Club for students to participate in to gain valuable experience.
Please note: Athletic shoes and long exercise leggings or pants are required for class participation.

The Learn To Fence Short Course (LTF) is where ALL new fencing students begin!
This is a 2-session introductory course in the sport of Fencing for ages 9-99+, male/female. It is taught by Coach Thomas Knowles, National Fencing Finalist and Certified Professional Coach/Director, who has been teaching fencers since 1992.
Session 1 of the LTF Short Course introduces students to fencing history and presents sound foundational positions, instills proper movements, and begins teaching correct blade skills, preliminary point control challenge, and simple attacks. Students will get to handle all of the equipment and work on the basics of fencing movements. Handouts will be provided for at-home reference and practice.
Session 2 of this Short Course will review and drill all technique introduced in Part 1 and expand the students' knowledge with the introduction of defenses, counterattacks, and the basics of the fencing strip and the rules of bouting. Equipment will be provided and students will gear up and FENCE using our fully modern electric scoring system.
This LTF Intro Short Course will answer most, if not all, questions that beginners have by introducing the basics and bringing it all together so that by the end of the class, the student WILL KNOW if this is something they'd like to develop, train, and ultimately, compete in - as a personal sport hobby. Memories will be made, points will be scored, and all students will leave with a sense of accomplishment for learning something unique, noble, ancient, and most of all, FUN!
