Fencing & Martial Arts 2025-2026 Season

Mon 530-BattleMasters Hero Training (New/Beg)
WELCOME TO THE BATTLEMASTERS HERO TRAINING PROGRAM!

In this Martial Arts program, we train in six different weapon styles: Shortsword, Longsword, Staff, Nunchaku, Double Swords, Knife (all fully padded) and explore historical/cultural weapons traditions from other times and places. However - more than working with the weapons - we wish to produce HEROES! The BattleMasters Padded Weapons Hero Training Program emphasizes and stresses the development and employment of the HEROIC VIRTUES: Discipline, Courage, Honor, Compassion and more. Mastery and demonstration of these Virtues is essential to completing our program and becoming a vaunted BLACK SASH!

BattleMasters Hero Training, Level One is mainly geared for Heroes who can only come once/week:
New/Beginning BattleMasters Heroes (White - Orange Sash) should plan to come on Mondays at 530pm.
Our Intermediate Level BattleMasters Heroes (Green - Purple Sash) should make their main training session every Wednesday at 530pm but also come on Mondays for extra in-class practice.
However, it is possible to see all levels at any session as our Advanced Heroes will be attending the easier level classes to help provide mentoring and encouragement to the less experienced and to have extra training for their advanced studies.

Attending only once per week will make progress slow unless supplementary practice at home is employed ("PRACTICE" is the work Heroes will do at home and outside of classes - those are for introducing new technique and polishing skills. Serious practice must be done OUTSIDE of classes). It is highly recommended that Heroes at an Intermediate Level wishing to develop and improve fully come at least twice per week (Level Two). All Heroes at an Advanced Level (Red Sash and above) are REQUIRED to attend at least twice per week in order to complete the program in a reasonable amount of time. As the program material increases in complexity with each new level, the amount of in-class instruction time required also increases. Three times per week would be optimal for Advanced Heroes.

Because there is a large body of material to learn, BattleMasters Heroes will assemble their own BattleManual to use as reference for at-home practice with Curriculum sheets, Virtue Sheets, Progress Notes/Sheets, and completed Level Check/Tests. This will give them full awareness of what is expected of them, how long it will take given their attendance, and the work they need to do to complete their level. To help supplement the in-class training, full overview technique videos are available so that Heroes may train 24/7 with proper technical demonstrations.

Finally, the MOST fun part of the BattleMasters Hero Training Program is our regular BattleGames, created by the Masters to challenge Heroes and offer the opportunity for the training to have real meaning as they battle each other in fully immersive and interactive combat encounters!

Fencing is often called 'Physical Chess' and as such, Sportsmanship is properly emphasized during training.
