FLAMENCO SUMMER CLASSES 2026
Castanets II (Sevillanas #1 and #2) - ONLINE OR IN-PERSON
In order to participate in this class, you need to be able to play a basic carretilla with your castanets. If you don't have castanet experience, it is recommended to take Castanet Level I on Wednesdays instead. But if you already have your carretilla down, it is time to put your castanets to use! While our friends with no sevillana experience learn the steps, you will be learning how to play while dancing. To take this class, you need to be proficient on Sevillanas #1 and #2.
Here is a place where you could order your castanets. Remember this will be a one in a life time expense so don't pick the cheapest ones ;) You should get a pair that is $65 or up.

Sevillanas #1 and #2 - ONLINE OR IN-PERSON
Sevillanas is a folk dance from Andalucía and even though it is not flamenco per se, everybody that dances flamenco knows how to dance Sevillanas. It is beneficial because you will be able to participate in social parties and events where sevillanas are danced—our Sevillanas socials, las ferias in Spain, the student show, and our presentations in festivals will always start with Sevillanas. You don't want to be sitting as we are all dancing! If you don't know your sevillanas yet, I am encouraging you to take this class. OLE!

Técnica Level I - Beginners with some Experience and Up - ONLINE OR IN-PERSON
This class is for all beginner and low intermediate level students. Taking técnica class is what, at the end, will make you a better dancer. EVERY student in the academy needs to take técnica. These classes, even though they can feel intimidating or like a lot of work, are the classes that will eventually push you to the next level. I encourage you to take at least two classes a week, and choosing técnica is one of the best options—especially if you want to get better at posture, footwork, turns, and projection.

Intro to Bata de Cola - Low Intermediate Students and up - ONLINE OR IN-PERSON
If you are a low intermediate student and you don't have a bata de cola, it is time to start thinking about getting one. All flamenco dancers eventually need castanets, a mantón, and a bata de cola. I understand it is an expense, but it is one you only make one time. I found a place on eBay that makes them for $255, which is a great price to start with! I hope you find the motivation to join us, because for 2027, our high intermediate choreographies will require a bata. Don't wait—jump into learning the basics now!

Intermediate 202 With MORE Experience - “Liviana Con Mantón Class” ONLINE OR IN-PERSON
Important Dates:
Student Showcase Sunday Dec 6th
"La Liviana" is a traditional and understated flamenco palo belonging to the cantes a compás family, closely related to the Seguiriya and the Serrana. It is characterized by a 12-beat rhythmic structure (a mix of 3/4 and 6/8 time) and has a lighter, more direct feel compared to other deep flamenco songs (cantes jondos).
Historically, it serves as an introduction or preparation for the Seguiriya. It is often performed without guitar accompaniment (a palo seco) or with very soft accompaniment. It stands out for its rural themes and a lighter dramatic weight, which is exactly where it gets its name—"liviana" meaning light!
Prerequisites:
In order to take this class, you need to have at least 6 years of flamenco experience and be proficient with the use of the mantón. You must have danced with a mantón in a previous class.

Important Dates:
Student Showcase Sunday Dec 6th
Class Description: Intro to Flamenco
This class is designed for students with absolutely no flamenco experience! We will start slowly from the very beginning, working with a tabla de pies (footwork drills) to help you train your feet and build a solid foundation. We will also focus on upper body and arm technique exercises. Once we build our basics, we will put it all together into a beautiful choreography using a flamenco style called Fandangos de Huelva.
About the Style:
Fandangos de Huelva is one of the oldest, most popular, and festive flamenco palos from Andalusia, originating in the province of Huelva (especially Alosno). It is characterized by a ternary rhythm (a 3/4 or 6/8 time signature), a structure of five octosyllabic verses, and a lyrical, light, and often joyful character. It is the perfect, upbeat rhythm to start your flamenco journey!

Dancing with a bata de cola is a beautiful and essential skill for all flamenco dancers, but making sure you are at the right level will ensure you can truly learn, safely manage the skirt, and—most importantly—enjoy the experience!
