Season 26/27
Baby Ballet (Ages 2.5 - 4)
Baby Ballet
Ages 2½–4
A gentle and joyful first introduction to dance, music, and movement.
Baby Ballet is designed to help our youngest dancers explore movement in a warm, playful, and developmentally appropriate environment. Through music, imaginative exercises, simple ballet vocabulary, and guided creative movement, children begin building coordination, balance, rhythm, body awareness, and confidence.
Classes may include basic ballet positions, tiptoe walks, pliés, stretches, simple jumps, traveling steps, scarf or prop activities, and short movement games. The focus is not on perfect technique, but on helping children become comfortable in the studio, follow simple directions, participate in a group, and develop a positive relationship with dance.
Students are encouraged to use their imagination, express themselves, and celebrate each small accomplishment. The class also supports early social skills such as listening, taking turns, sharing space, and moving safely around others.
No previous dance experience is required. Dancers should be comfortably independent enough to participate in class with gentle instructor guidance.

Intermediate Modern: Level 2 - 4
Intermediate Modern
Intermediate–Advanced • Instructor Placement
Develop the grounded technique, physical intelligence, historical understanding, and artistic maturity expected in collegiate concert dance training.
Teen Conservatory: Modern is a rigorous, college-style course for dancers preparing for concert dance, auditions, collegiate programs, choreography, and professional repertory. Students train in the foundational principles of modern dance while developing strength, control, mobility, musicality, spatial awareness, and a more individual artistic voice.
Classes may include center work, floorwork, traveling progressions, improvisation, falls and recoveries, contractions and releases, swings, spirals, shifts of weight, suspension, jumps, and repertory. Dancers learn to work with gravity, breath, momentum, and the floor while maintaining clear alignment, efficient movement pathways, and technical intention.
Training may draw from multiple modern traditions and approaches, allowing students to experience different uses of weight, shape, rhythm, dynamics, and expression. Historical and cultural context is incorporated so dancers understand modern dance as a distinct concert form rather than simply another name for contemporary movement.
Greater emphasis is placed on movement analysis, choreographic interpretation, ensemble awareness, improvisational confidence, and the ability to adapt to unfamiliar movement languages. Students are expected to retain material efficiently, apply corrections quickly, participate thoughtfully in creative work, and maintain professional rehearsal etiquette.
This course prepares dancers for collegiate modern programs, concert dance companies, auditions, choreography, interdisciplinary performance, and repertory that demands grounded, expressive, and technically informed movement.
Previous ballet, contemporary, jazz, or modern training is strongly recommended. Enrollment is based on instructor placement, technical readiness, maturity, and commitment.

Jazz Funk & Waacking
Jazz Funk & Waacking
Intermediate–Advanced • Instructor Placement
Develop the versatility, cultural understanding, and performance maturity expected in collegiate and professional commercial dance programs.
Teen Conservatory: Jazz Funk & Waacking is an intensive performance and repertory class that studies jazz funk and waacking as two distinct movement practices while exploring how each functions within commercial dance, live entertainment, and contemporary performance.
The jazz funk portion integrates jazz-based technique with commercial movement, isolations, dynamics, textures, musical phrasing, precision, and performance-driven choreography. Dancers learn to adapt their movement quality to different artists, concepts, and choreographic styles while developing the clarity, confidence, and camera awareness required for auditions, stage performance, and filmed dance work.
The waacking portion introduces and develops foundational arm pathways, posing, rhythm, musical interpretation, character, freestyle, and storytelling. Students study waacking with respect for its origins in 1970s Los Angeles club culture and the LGBTQ+ communities—particularly queer communities of color—that created, developed, and preserved the form. Waacking is taught as its own culturally significant freestyle dance, not simply as dramatic arm choreography or an extension of jazz.
Classes may include technical warm-ups, conditioning, movement drills, across-the-floor progressions, repertory, guided freestyle, improvisational tasks, performance coaching, and filmed choreography. Some class periods may focus primarily on one form, allowing students to develop its individual vocabulary and movement quality before exploring thoughtful points of connection between the styles.
In keeping with a college-style training environment, dancers are expected to retain choreography efficiently, apply corrections, contribute to artistic discussions, research cultural context, demonstrate professional rehearsal etiquette, and perform with both technical precision and individual point of view.
This course prepares students for collegiate dance programs, commercial auditions, music-video and live-stage performance, convention training, competition, and professional repertory settings.
Previous jazz, commercial dance, hip hop, or related movement experience is recommended. Enrollment is based on instructor placement, maturity, and readiness for conservatory-level training.

Prepare for the professional commercial dance industry through versatile training, performance development, and dancing for the camera.
Teen Conservatory: Commercial Dance Training is a college-style course designed for dancers interested in music videos, concert tours, television, film, live entertainment, commercial auditions, and professional performance opportunities. Students develop the versatility, adaptability, confidence, and professional habits required to work effectively in fast-paced commercial environments.
Training may integrate jazz, jazz funk, hip hop, contemporary, heels foundations, musical theatre, improvisation, and performance repertory. Dancers learn to quickly understand and embody different choreographic styles while maintaining strong technique, musicality, precision, individuality, and stage presence.
A central component of the course is Dancing on Film. Students explore how performance changes when choreography is created for the camera rather than a traditional stage. They practice working with camera angles, framing, spacing, eyelines, facial expression, intention, continuity, multiple takes, and performance scale. Dancers may also learn basic concepts related to self-tapes, audition footage, music-video staging, short-form dance content, and professional on-camera etiquette.

Commercial Dance Training and Choreography
Intermediate–Advanced • Instructor Placement

Go beyond choreography through serious study of hip hop foundations, street and club styles, freestyle, history, and dance culture.
Hip Hop+ is an intermediate-to-advanced training class for dancers who want to deepen both their movement skills and their understanding of the communities, traditions, and cultural foundations connected to hip hop, street dance, and club dance.
Rather than focusing only on learning combinations, students develop groove, rhythm, bounce, rock, weight transfer, musicality, texture, coordination, freestyle confidence, and individual movement quality. Classes may explore foundational concepts from hip hop party dances, breaking, popping, locking, house, waacking, and other street or club forms according to the instructor’s training and the curriculum being studied.
The “+” represents the education surrounding the movement. Students learn about the histories, music, terminology, social environments, innovators, and communities that shaped the forms they practice. Styles are taught as distinct traditions rather than being blended together under a generalized hip hop label.
Classes may include foundational drills, technique exercises, freestyle prompts, cyphers, choreography, repertory, music study, cultural discussions, video analysis, and collaborative movement exchanges. Students learn how to participate respectfully in freestyle and social-dance spaces, exchange movement ideas, support other dancers, and contribute to the energy of a shared session.
Intermediate and advanced dancers are challenged to move beyond imitation by developing stronger musical interpretation, stylistic authenticity, adaptability, performance quality, and a more personal artistic voice. Students are expected to approach the class with curiosity, humility, discipline, and respect for the people and communities from which the movement originates.
This course supports dancers preparing for commercial performance, freestyle sessions, battles, auditions, collegiate programs, competition, choreography, and deeper participation in street and club dance communities.
Previous hip hop, street-style, freestyle, or related dance training is strongly recommended. Enrollment is based on instructor placement, musicality, technical readiness, maturity, and commitment to both physical and cultural study.

Choreography & Creative Direction
Choreography & Creative Direction
Developing Creators • Instructor Placement
Develop original movement, a clear artistic voice, and the leadership skills required to bring creative ideas from concept to performance.
Choreography & Creative Direction is a college-style course for dancers who want to grow as choreographers, movement creators, rehearsal directors, and collaborative artists. Students learn how to transform an initial idea into structured choreography while developing the creative, technical, and communication skills needed to lead other performers.
The course explores the fundamental tools of dance composition, including shape, space, time, energy, rhythm, dynamics, repetition, contrast, transitions, formations, musical phrasing, and the development of movement motifs. Students learn how to generate original material, revise their work, and organize movement into choreography that feels intentional rather than simply placing steps together.
Classes may include improvisational prompts, composition assignments, music analysis, movement research, phrase development, staging exercises, peer feedback, repertory analysis, and opportunities to choreograph solo, small-group, and ensemble work. Students may also explore creating for the stage, camera, competition, musical theatre, concert dance, and commercial performance.
Creative direction is incorporated so students learn how to develop a complete concept around their choreography. This may include selecting music, identifying a theme or story, creating visual references, planning costumes and props, choosing formations, considering lighting and camera angles, and communicating a unified artistic vision to dancers and collaborators.
Students also develop rehearsal-leadership skills, including how to teach movement clearly, count music, demonstrate effectively, give constructive corrections, manage rehearsal time, adapt choreography to different dancers, and create a respectful and productive creative environment.
The course emphasizes experimentation, revision, collaboration, and artistic responsibility. Students are encouraged to take creative risks while learning how to receive feedback, explain their choices, credit inspiration appropriately, and approach cultural movement forms with research and respect.
Throughout the season, students may create original works for informal showings, filmed projects, studio performances, competitions, or choreographic showcases. Completed pieces may also become part of a developing portfolio or choreography reel.
This course prepares students for collegiate dance composition, student choreography opportunities, creative internships, assistant choreographer positions, teaching, commercial projects, concert work, and future creative-director roles.
Previous dance training is recommended. Enrollment is based on maturity, commitment, collaborative readiness, and interest in developing original creative work.

Adult Jazz Funk
Ages 18+ • Beginner-Friendly • All Levels
Build confidence, musicality, performance quality, and individual style through two distinct movement traditions.
Adult Jazz Funk is an energetic, inclusive class that introduces dancers to commercial jazz funk and the foundations of waacking while honoring the unique movement qualities, history, and cultural roots of each style.
The jazz funk portion of class focuses on performance-driven choreography, isolations, clean lines, rhythm, dynamics, texture, confidence, and stage presence. Students explore how jazz-based technique and commercial movement come together in a bold, expressive style commonly used in music videos, live entertainment, and stage performance.
The waacking portion introduces foundational arm pathways, poses, rhythm, musical interpretation, freestyle, character, and storytelling. Waacking is taught as its own culturally significant dance form, with respect for its origins in 1970s Los Angeles club culture and the LGBTQ+ communities that created, developed, and preserved it.
Classes may include a full-body warm-up, conditioning, technique drills, movement progressions, guided freestyle, and choreography. Some weeks may focus more deeply on one style, while others may explore thoughtful ways the two can complement one another without treating them as interchangeable.
The environment is supportive, welcoming, and judgment-free. Students are encouraged to develop confidence, reconnect with movement, explore their individuality, and perform at the level that feels appropriate for them.
No previous dance experience is required. Modifications and more advanced options are provided throughout class.
