Workshop - All The Opera You Can Stand (4 classes)
All the Opera You Can Stand: A light-hearted approach to an irresistible art form

4 Classes: Oct. 1, 8, 15, & 22
Time: 1:00-2:30 PM at C.R.O.W.

Course Overview

For a remarkable 150 years, roughly 1775 to 1925, Grand Opera dominated theaters throughout
Europe, spread enthusiastically to America, and left a legacy that is experienced in popular
culture to this day. Its composers and performers are legendary. Its sheer theatricality, as
evidenced by superb stagecraft and costuming, as well as orchestral and vocal excellence,
almost disguises its most subversive impact on the culture: memorable melodies. If you’ve ever
asked, “Where did that tune come from?” you may be surprised that opera music has turned up
in everything from commercials and cartoons to video games. Discover the enjoyment – and fun
– of a decidedly non-snooty classical art form. Watch performance cuts from acclaimed
productions, an Emmy-winning documentary about the making of opera as told by union stage
hands, clips from classic movies and television that used opera to comic effect, and discuss
your own experiences as we explore opera’s many pleasures.

About the Instructor: Linda Yoder
Linda was born in Chicago and was brought up in the Fox River Valley community of St.
Charles, Illinois. As her high school accompanist, she had the opportunity to perform Victor
Herbert and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and was introduced to opera as a junior when she
accompanied the school’s top soprano in her senior recital. She hasn’t been the same since.
She’s attended 60 mainstage operas, maintaining that it’s the only place where you can get all
gussied up to see three hours of murder, mayhem, suicide and adultery and not feel bad about
yourself.
A business writer, editor and manager for more years than is safe to put on a resume, she also
taught writing at colleges in Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, and Illinois. She retired as
Development Director of Peoria Ballet, moved to Florence in 2011, and has spoken about opera
at Florence Rotary, City Club, Last Resort Players and PEO.
