The Heart of Deseret Choir (formerly Sanpete Family Choir) is a choir with two separate groups. One is a children's choir, the other is a concert choir for experienced musicians ages 14+. The choir is sponsored by CTA. The children rehearse in Ephraim.

The children's choir focuses on helping children learn the art of choral singing and intonation, and aims to improve overall musicianship with opportunities to sing in harmony. Special emphasis is given to learning proper vocal technique to avoid any injury, as well as learning and improving the skill of sight singing.

The choir is sponsored by CTA. The concert choir currently rehearses in Ephraim at the YSA Stake Center located right next to the institute building at 83 N 100 E, Ephraim.

The concert choir is made up of experienced and passionate singers, both men and women, who seek to continually increase their musicality and are desirous of an opportunity to share their musical gifts and talents.

Irish Dance: Beginner 1 (ages 7+, adults welcome!)

This class teaches the foundations and basics of Irish step dancing, beginning with proper technique, including alignment, posture, balance, and timing. Soft shoe dancing will be the focus here, with the opportunity to move to hard shoe dancing in Beginner 2.

Students will learn the first movements of Irish dancing (side sevens, skips, leaps, etc.), which will be combined to create simple reels and jigs. Care will be taken to build leg strength to avoid injury.

Irish Dance: Beginner 2 (ages 7+, adults welcome!)

This class will challenge returning students by continuing to build on the basics while introducing a stronger emphasis on technique. We will keep perfecting the soft shoe dances the students already know and potentially progress to figure (group) dances, which are team building and lots of fun!

We will also start learning hard shoe movements and rhythms so that the students can enjoy the percussive footwork Irish dance is well known for.

Pre-requisites: This class is generally appropriate for students who have previously taken at least 2 semesters of Irish. If you are unsure of which class is best for you, please contact Maddie directly (801) 830-9864.

Irish Dance: Intermediate

In this class, returning students will further increase their dance technique and skill as they are taught more intricate footwork in both soft shoe and hard shoe. Students will gain a deeper understanding of timing and rhythm as they strengthen their muscles and improve their endurance.

Students must be approved by the instructor to take this class.

Description: Individual or private singing lessons are the fastest and most effective way to improve both the quality of the voice and the confidence to use it effectively as a form of enhanced communication.

Lessons incorporate the ongoing assessment of the individual in every lesson. Singers are taught the functioning of their instrument, smooth bridging to utilize all pitches, the development of tone and strength with a variety of songs to develop the ability to sing any type of music.

Skill is developed along with stable and consistent freedom and control of the breath and voice using a variety of effective tools and exercises to establish a desired physical response that can be consistently repeated in practice and performance.

Students are taught awareness of their own voice in an encouraging environment, along with artist development for those who desire to audition or perform in more professional environments. When used in combination with the Vocal Performance Workshop (by recommendation of the teacher), singers progress rapidly to become comfortable with the thrill of singing for an audience of any size.

Intro to Dance/Dance Me a Story

Intro to Dance: Learning the fundamentals: following directions, alignment and posture, strengthening legs and feet, learning balance, movement and locomotor skills (developing coordination) in combination with free movement and simple story dances, music & spatial awareness. Ballet based without strict technique, an ideal foundation class for progressing into any dance form.

Dance Me a Story: Fairy tales set to music and dance. Includes locomotor and basic dance steps and some of our favorite stories, including: Hansel and Gretl, The Toy Shop, Twelve Dancing Princesses, Nighttime at the Zoo, The Red Shoes, The Nutcracker, and Weather Walk.

Material will include ensemble songs, scene study, character development, chorus, blocking, movement and choreography. Vocal Performance Workshop

This workshop format is a shared private voice lesson (class size limited) for those ready to be challenged as a solo vocal performer. Singers prepare material (introducing "slate" name and song) presented for feedback, instruction and coaching in front of a supportive audience. Individual and group coaching will be given to assist the development of your own unique presentation. Depending on class size, class may only run until 6 pm.

Vocal coaching based on Common Sense Singing includes: balance of vocal registration, breath support, pure vowels, clear consonants, styling and interpreting your song, techniques and experience that develop confidence in front of an audience, development of repertory and exposure to complex ensemble music to perform in a group.

**Prerequisites: placement interviews will be held the week before the first day of class. If it is determined that this class is not a correct fit, the singer will be offered placement in Singing With Confidence.

Instruction and exercises that are targeted to building the strength, flexibility, and coordination necessary to dance en pointe. Completion of at-home exercises (to be given as weekly assignments during class) is required.

The class is by invitation, but those who are taking Ballet II may be able to take the class in ballet slippers. Please contact Claire Yarrington at (707) 616-7798 to determine eligibility. To maintain the quality, the maximum number of students we can take is 10.

Sing With Confidence - Group Voice Lesson

The ideal class to begin and continue to develop the solo singing voice. This class will focus on the fundamentals of breathing, posture, resonation, diction and articulation, with some individual coaching in a group setting, allowing all participants to learn and benefit from observations, corrections and adjustments. Singers will develop comfort in presentation by singing in front of others.
