TEEN: Modern I
PRE and CO-REQUISITES
• Previous Modern experience is preferred (e.g. Youth Intermediate Modern).
• Must also register in D5-D6 Ballet or Teen Ballet.
• Ages 12+
Teen Modern I is perfect for students entering Company who would like to add an additional style of dance to their schedule. The year will begin with a review of the foundations to ensure proficiency. Students will explore elements of fall & recovery and contract & release, learning to find balance in unstable positions. What started in the 20th century as a style breaking free from ballet, is now utilized to enhance ballet technique by building resilience when off-balance. The curriculum is Graham influenced and Horton focused, blending the foundational fluidity of the Graham technique with the strength building and structure that only Horton technique can provide. Improvisation is when dancers explore the limitless range of their artistic ability through assignment prompts that challenge them to move in new ways. Improvisation is vital in gaining confidence in self expression and developing skills in students who aspire to become choreographers. It is so important that the end of each month is dedicated as Improv Day.

JUNIOR: Modern
Kick off your shoes off and explore new ways to move through the style of modern dance. Rhythmic drums are prominent in the music, teaching dancers how to feel the pulse of the song and count the beats. Dancers learn to control their balance as they roll, prance, and leap through space. Improvisation is included in every class, allowing time for dancers to explore their own movement ideas through prompts. Improvisation is vital in gaining confidence in self expression and developing skills in students who hope to choreograph their own dances in the future.
Modern dance evolved from ballet and is a creative art form that uses natural and abstract movements, instead of the standardized movements of classical ballet. The movements express ideas, feelings, and emotions. Modern is known for its independence, invention, and non-traditional attitude, but it does use classical ballet vocabulary and terminology, as well as ballet exercises, and thus ballet experience is recommended.
