LEVEL 2/3 CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary 2/3 classes combine elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers connect the mind and the body through fluid and expressive dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. There is less emphasis placed on turn-out and verticality and more work with lateral and off-center torso movements and an openness to emotional interpretation and expression. Classes cover movement combinations, center exercises, and elements of floor work while exploring the relationship of the body to gravity and space. Contemporary dance promotes strength, flexibility and coordination. As with all our classes, our curriculum integrates Christian principles and values as we share the joy of the Lord through the art of dance.

THIS CLASS MAY ONLY BE TAKEN IN COMBINATION WITH BALLET 2/3.

LEVEL 4/5/6 MODERN
Modern 4/5/6 dance classes explore highly expressive, freeform and improvisational movements that challenge the structured technique of classical ballet. The focus of modern dance is expression, rather than following a rigid set of postures or technical positions like those used in ballet. Modern dance movements are considered freeform and fluid, and are often inspired by other dance styles like African dance, ballet, and folk dance. Though modern dance technique is considered more relaxed and natural than ballet, it can require considerable core work and strength. Rather than striving for the weightlessness and grace of ballet, modern dancers use their body weight to propel themselves across the floor, often falling, tumbling, or rolling to express rhythm.

THIS CLASS MAY ONLY BE TAKEN IN COMBINATION WITH BALLET 4/5/6.

Class Length: 60 min
Class Requirements: Age 12+. Placement class required. Prerequisite: Level 4+ or Instructor permission. Multiple classes are required at this level; please see the Preparatory Division Level Requirements or contact the Director at info@christiandancealliance.com for more information.
