DRESS CODE & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Oct 02, 2026 07:07 AM
Proper attire, footwear, and hair are an important part of dance training. Appropriate clothing allows instructors to safely see a dancer's alignment, technique, and body placement while reducing the risk of injury.
Dancers are expected to arrive prepared for class with the required attire, shoes, and hair secured appropriately. Instructors may ask a dancer to modify clothing, hair, or footwear if it does not meet the requirements or creates a safety concern.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Clothing should be clean, appropriate, and suitable for movement.
Dancers should wear clothing that allows instructors to clearly see body alignment and technique when required.
Hair must be secured away from the face for all classes.
Long hair must be securely tied back and, when specified, worn in a bun.
Jewelry should be limited. Dangling earrings, large hoops, necklaces, bracelets, or other items that could catch on a dancer, equipment, or another dancer are not permitted.
Dancers should not wear watches or other accessories that could interfere with movement or create a safety hazard.
Street shoes may not be worn on the dance floor unless specifically permitted by an instructor.
Dancers should have the correct shoes for their class and should not participate barefoot when footwear is required.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, oversized clothing, and baggy pants are not permitted in classes where form-fitting attire is required.
Dancers should bring their required shoes and equipment to every class.
BALLET
Ballet is a highly technical and precise classical dance form. Proper attire allows instructors to clearly observe alignment, placement, and technique.
Required Attire
Pink tights
Leotard
Pink ballet shoes
Hair secured in a bun
Hair & Safety
Hair must be securely pulled away from the face and worn in a bun when long enough to do so. Hair should be neat and secure enough to remain in place throughout class.
Footwear
Pink ballet shoes are required. Ballet shoes should fit properly and be appropriate for the dancer's level.
Not Permitted
T-shirts
Sweatshirts
Baggy pants
Oversized clothing
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary combines elements of modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet and emphasizes fluid movement and connection between the mind and body.
Required Attire
Form-fitting dance clothing
Half-sole dance shoes
Hair secured away from the face
Hair & Safety
Hair must be secured away from the face and should not interfere with turns, floor work, inversions, or other movement.
Footwear
Half soles are required unless otherwise directed by the instructor for a specific class or choreography.
Not Permitted
T-shirts
Sweatshirts
Baggy pants
Oversized clothing that prevents instructors from observing alignment and technique
JAZZ
Jazz is an energetic and theatrical style that combines elements of classical ballet, modern dance, and contemporary movement.
Required Attire
Form-fitting dance clothing
Tan jazz shoes
Hair secured away from the face
Hair & Safety
Hair must be secured away from the face and securely tied back when necessary so that it does not interfere with movement, turns, kicks, or choreography.
Footwear
Tan jazz shoes are required. Shoes should be clean, properly fitted, and appropriate for dance use.
Not Permitted
T-shirts
Sweatshirts
Baggy pants
Oversized clothing
TAP
Tap is a rhythmic style of dance in which specialized shoes create percussion through metal taps attached to the heel and ball of the shoe.
Required Attire
Comfortable, moveable dance clothing
Properly fitted tap shoes
Hair secured away from the face
Hair & Safety
Hair must be secured away from the face and should not interfere with movement or visibility.
Footwear
Tap shoes are required. Tap shoes must be properly fitted, securely fastened, and in good condition.
Dancers should not wear tap shoes outside of the designated dance areas. Tap shoes should not be worn on outdoor surfaces, as dirt and debris can damage the shoes and create safety concerns on the studio floor.
ACRO
Acro combines classical dance technique with athletic and acrobatic movements. Because dancers perform inversions, rolls, balances, and other skills, appropriate attire and hair are especially important for safety.
Required Attire
Form-fitting dance clothing
Hair secured in a bun
Hair & Safety
Hair must be securely worn in a bun or otherwise secured tightly enough to remain in place during floor work, inversions, rolls, and acrobatic skills.
Hair accessories should be secure and should not create a hazard when the dancer is performing floor work.
Footwear
Acro is generally performed barefoot unless otherwise directed by the instructor.
Socks should not be worn during acro skills unless specifically approved by the instructor, as they may reduce traction and increase the risk of slipping.
Not Permitted
T-shirts
Sweatshirts
Baggy pants
Oversized clothing
Loose hair
Jewelry or accessories that could cause injury during floor work
HIP HOP
Hip hop incorporates elements of popping, locking, breaking, jazz, tap, and other dance styles. Classes involve athletic and rhythmic movement and require appropriate footwear.
Required Attire
Comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement
Clean sneakers designated for indoor dance use
Hair secured away from the face
Hair & Safety
Hair should be secured away from the face and tied back when necessary so it does not interfere with movement.
Footwear
CLEAN SNEAKERS ARE REQUIRED.
Dancers must have a pair of sneakers designated for indoor studio use.
NO WORN STREET SHOES IN CLASS.
Outdoor shoes carry dirt, gravel, and other debris onto the dance floor and can damage the flooring or create a slipping/tripping hazard.
Dancers may be asked to change shoes if their footwear is excessively dirty or inappropriate for the studio floor.
POMS
Poms combines elements of jazz, hip hop, and acrobatics with the use of pom poms. The style requires precision, athleticism, sharp movements, and strong technique.
Required Attire
Form-fitting dance clothing
Jazz shoes
Hair secured in a bun
Poms ordered through Momentum Dance Center
Hair & Safety
Hair must be securely worn in a bun and must remain secured throughout class.
This is particularly important because poms choreography can involve sharp arm movements, turns, jumps, and other athletic movements.
Footwear
Jazz shoes are required unless otherwise directed by the instructor.
Poms
Poms must be the designated poms ordered through Momentum Dance Center unless the instructor gives permission for another set to be used.
Dancers are responsible for bringing their poms to class and maintaining them in good condition.
SAFETY & DRESS CODE ENFORCEMENT
Dress code requirements are in place to support proper technique, injury prevention, visibility, and a productive learning environment.
If a dancer arrives without the required attire, shoes, or properly secured hair, the instructor may ask the dancer to make the appropriate correction before participating.
Repeated failure to follow dress code or safety requirements may result in the parent/guardian being contacted.
Momentum Dance Center reserves the right to make reasonable adjustments to dress code requirements when necessary for a particular class, choreography, dancer's safety, or studio activity.
When in doubt, ask your instructor before class.
Our goal is not to make dress code complicated — it is to make sure every dancer can move safely, learn effectively, and get the most out of every class.
